Approve bond, levy to improve school safety | Letter

Jan 15, 2014

Editor, The Beacon:

If voters need another reason to support the Mukilteo School District’s bond and levy measures on the Feb. 11 ballot, they need look no further than the $2 million of the bond dedicated to the improvement of safety and security on our campuses.

A week hardly goes by that we don’t hear something in the news about dangerous and even deadly events in our nation’s schools.  Students in Mukilteo deserve every consideration to help prevent such an unfortunate instance in our community.

In addition, security is not just a physical reality. Studies show that students who feel safe in their schools have improved academic outcomes.

This $2 million will be used to work with local law enforcement to craft security measures customized to each school building.

Additional security cameras, perimeter control systems and electronic locks are just a few of the measures that will be considered as schools work to recommend the use of best practices and current technologies to create a climate of safety in every building.

Please join me in voting “Yes” for the Mukilteo School District’s bond and levy on Feb. 11.  Safe schools are better schools!
