Just in time for spring showers, rain barrels are coming to the streets of Everett. To help kick off the city’s “Let it Rain” program, 13 unique rain barrels decorated by area residents were installed today throughout the city.

“The barrels celebrate the diverse roles that water plays in our lives, from quintessential Puget Sound creatures to the simple beauty of a backyard garden,” said Apryl Hynes, surface water public education specialist.

“The barrels are also a visual reminder of some of the simple ways we can all help conserve water and reduce flooding at our homes.”

Area artists, including a group of high school students, were commissioned to design and create the rain barrels now on display in front of Everett businesses and landmarks.

A map of the barrel locations is available on the city’s website: www.everettwa.org/default.aspx?ID=2169. The rain barrels will be available for purchase through an online auction in April.

“Rain barrels are an integral part of green stormwater principles that homeowners can use to manage water on their property,” said Hynes. “The Let it Rain program provides a variety of simple, effective ideas that homeowners can use to control runoff on their properties.”

In addition to the rain barrel display, which runs through May 2, the city is offering assistance with rain garden installations, as well as discounted rain barrels for Everett residents.

Residents can purchase premade 55-gallon barrels, complete with a spigot, overflow and double screen to keep bugs and debris out, at one-day sales on July 19 and Oct. 18.

Residents can also assemble their own barrels with the help of Public Works staff at “Make it, Take it” workshops on May 22 or Sept. 23. For details, visit www.everettwa.org/default.aspx?ID=2170 .
