Attention parents: Pick up your kids after games | School brief
The Mukilteo School District has issued the following safety reminder to parents of high school students:
It is 10:30 p.m. on a Friday at Goddard Stadium: It is cold and dark, with rain threatening to start at any moment. The football game was over more than an hour ago.
The crowd of football fans has dwindled, but your student is still waiting to get picked up by you in the Mariner High School parking lot.
Does this sound like a place for your child to be hanging out alone? Of course not, but it has been the scene after every home football game this year.
Students who are waiting for a ride home are not alone, of course. The Kamiak and Mariner administration is responsible for student safety at school sponsored events and must remain on site until the last student is picked up.
Staff wait with your children because it is simply not safe for them to be without parental or adult supervision and protection following the conclusion of a school sponsored activity.
As a reminder, they ask that all students be picked up from any evening program on or off campus within 15 minutes of the conclusion of the event. This is called “The 15 Minute Rule.”
While this means that parents will be in the parking lot prior to the end of a game, concert, play, etc., the tradeoff is that children are safe and accounted for and not in an empty, dark and cold parking lot an hour after an event ended.
