Bellarmine Prep boys down Mukilteo , advance to state lacrosse quarterfinals

Bellarmine Prep scored seven unanswered goals in the second quarter to take the lead for good and advance to the quarterfinals of the Washington Lacrosse Boys State Championship tournament with a 16 - 13 opening round win over Mukilteo, Tuesday at Kamiak High School.

The opening round win over Mukilteo sets up a Friday quarterfinal date with Mercer Island, which had a bye in the opening round.

Mukilteo had the early advantage taking a 6 - 5 lead in the first, but Bellarmine shut down Mukilteo in the second, scoring seven unanswered goals to take a 12 - 6 lead into the half. Although Mukilteo persistently worked its way back into the game, outscoring Prep 3 - 1 in the third and 4 - 3 in the fourth, it was never able to overcome dominating second-quarter performance.

 

Garrett Stockdale led the way for Bellarmine Prep with six goals and six ground balls, while Max Jones had five goals and three assists.

 

Mukilteo's Alex Okemah had three goals, an assist and 14 ground balls.

 

Bellarmine Prep, now 6-9-0 (5-9-0 in the regular season), next faces Mercer Island, which had an opening round bye, in the state quarterfinals, Friday, May 18 in a 6 p.m. start at Islander Stadium on Mercer Island. Mukilteo concludes the season with a 10-6-0 (10-5-0 in the regular season) record.
