City employee wins horticulture scholarship
Kevin Wirt was recently awarded a $750 scholarship by the Mukilteo Way Garden Club to go toward horticulture classes at Edmonds Community College.
Wirt has worked for the Mukilteo Public Works Department only since June, but his enthusiasm for the work, his desire to learn more about the field of horticulture, and the encouragement of co-workers lead him to apply for the garden club's scholarship.
Club President Diane Tinsley awarded Wirt with a certificate confirming his scholarship during the club's meeting Sept. 17.
At the meeting, Wirt told garden club members about his experience in Public Works and his interest in learning more, especially in the areas of pruning and turf care. To show his gratitude, he shook the hand of each member and thanked them individually.
Kevin Wirt is now the second Mukilteo city employee to be awarded the horticulture scholarship. Christine Allen, who leads the Public Works crew, was a scholarship recipient in 2009.
The Mukilteo Way Garden Club established the Horticulture Scholarship in 2007 with the proceeds from the first Mukilteo Garden and Quilt Tour. The scholarship is offered annually, even though the tour is held every other year.
