Dare I Hope?

I have not been too bloggish this baseball season, given my last entry is dated in April. At that time I wrote I was pleasantly surprised by the Mariners taking 3 games from the Angels and getting off to a good start. After all in every baseball fan's heart, hope springs eternal that THIS year will be THE year.

Then the season starts. For many teams Memorial Day means they are finished. The chase for post season berths belongs to other cities and other fans, other places. It's not pretty. So I decided to adopt a 'wait and see' attitude about the Mariners. After all, past performance is the best indicator of future behavior and we all know what that means in regards to this team.

However here we are, halfway through August and the M's are indeed competing for a wild card spot in this season's Fall Classic. Who'd a thunk it? Also I am inspired by the fact the Oakland A's won the division recently on the last day of the season. With the M's only 6 games out of first, anything is possible and they have 6 games remaining against both the A's and the Angels.

I continue to be pleasantly surprised by this years edition of the team. The pitching, both starters and bullpen, has remained constant and at a high level. The defense is one of the best in the league and the ability to score runs.............well you can't have everything. But they do show a slight uptick in that most important of all offensive statistics, crossing the plate.

With the acquisition of Austin Jackson and the Kendrys Morales trade the Mariners have shown some improvement offensively. That is where they need the most work because no matter how good the starters and bullpen are, if you are not scoring runs well... you know what happens.

It should be an interesting and fun 6 weeks of the season and our team will be involved. Stay tuned for good times.

Now go out there and take one for the team!
