Edmonds-Woodway defeats Mariner 56-12 | Prep football
The Edmonds-Woodway football team dismantled Mariner in a 56-12 final game of the regular season.
The Warriors remained undefeated this season, earning a perfect 8-0 regular season record.
Against Mariner on Friday, the Warriors jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks to a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Davis Giles to Jason Smarr. Junior Opoku-Mensah scored off a 7-yard run to end the first quarter.
Opuku-Mensah scored in the second quarter, this time off a 1-yard run, followed by Mariner's Joshua Williamson making a 60-yard touchdown run.
At halftime, Edmonds-Woodway led 21-6.
After the break, Opoku-Mensah scored thanks to a 22-yard run downfield, followed by a 1-yard touchdown in the middle of the third. His fifth and final points of the evening came after an explosive 82-yard run.
Mariner's Williamson scored the second Marauder touchdown of the evening with 11 second left on the clock in the third quarter. Edmonds-Woodway's Mac McLachan followed suit with an 80-yard touchdown as time expired in the third quarter. The Warriors led 49-12 lead going into the final minutes.
Warrior Nick Venema scored the only points of the fourth quarter, from a 19-yard run with 3:08 left on the game clock.
Edmonds-Woodway had a total of 621 yards during the match, 549 of which were rushing, with 72 passing. Mariner posted a total of 193 yards, 171 rushing and 22 passing.
Opoku-Mensah had 280 rushing yards during the win, averaging 10.8 per carry, while McLachan posted 134 yards for the team, with an average of 22.3. McLachan was responsible for one interception in the game, while teammate Connor McCole added two. Williamson had 115 for Mariner, while teammate Dyonte Law earned 51.
Edmonds-Woodway will take on Lake Stevens, the No. 1 Wesco North team next Friday, Nov. 1 in a game at Lake Stevens. Mariner will play in a seeding match as well.
