How much does it matter to you that every moment is a miracle?

By Gordy Arlin, A Bahá’í of Mukilteo | May 22, 2013

God enjoins us: “O SON OF BEING! Thou art My lamp and My light is in thee. Get thou from it thy radiance and seek none other than Me. For I have created thee rich and have bountifully shed my favor upon thee.” (All quotes are from the Bahá’í Writings.)

From where do you get your “radiance”? Looking around me (and recalling my own past) I can see that most humans are inclined to get their radiance from:

• Their bank accounts / financial standings;

• Their jobs / professions / career circumstances;

• Their social standings / friends;

• Their families / heredity / spouses / offspring;

• Their health;

• Their intellectual capacities / accomplishments / educations;

• Their appearances / looks / physiques / clothes;

• Their talents / gifts / athletic prowess;

• Their stuff / neighborhoods / homes / cars / toys and goodies; and

• Their recreations / pets / entertainment / vacations.

Now, none of these things are bad in themselves; a Bahá’í is not asked to live the austere life of an ascetic; on the contrary, Bahá’u’lláh has revealed that it is God’s will that:

“Should a man wish to adorn himself with the ornaments of the earth, or to wear its apparels, or partake of the benefits it can bestow, no harm can befall him, if he alloweth nothing whatever to intervene between him and God, for God hath ordained every good thing, whether created in the heavens or in the earth, for such of His servants as truly believe in Him.”

So, goodies are OK, but God also says: “…My light is in thee. Get thou from it thy radiance and seek none other than Me.” So, what is the truth? Both are the truth.

If a person earnestly seeks God, one discovers that God indeed directs us to: take an education, take a profession, manage funds wisely and save for the future, have a family, mind your health and your appearance, nurture your talents, improve yourself, have and enjoy stuff, create things, be joyous and have a good time.

But above all of these pursuits, God wants us to prioritize making our primary radiance be: the acknowledgement of that particular light of God’s love for us, as individuals, that is within us; God wants you to prioritize the ‘being present to’ and the celebration of that most basic spark of His love for you, as a distinct individual, that is found at your core, that is at the absolute base of the foundation of your personal existence, your self-awareness, your living experience, your being.

God alone, on purpose, created you miraculously and marvelously from absolute nothingness, from void, from nada.

God wants this particular truth of reality to be No. 1, high on a pinnacle above No. 2, at the beginning of your Top 10 list of the things that you are jazzed by. Let’s give credit where credit is due. Seems reasonable? Yes.

In closing, God encourages us:

“O SON OF MAN! Veiled in My immemorial being and in the ancient eternity of My essence, I knew My love for thee; therefore I created thee… Wherefore, do thou love me, that I may name thy name and fill thy soul with the spirit of life.”

“Within thee I have placed the essence of My light. Be thou content with it and seek naught else, for My work is perfect…

“Ere thou didst issue from thy mother’s womb, I destined for thee... eyes to watch over thee, and hearts to love thee.

“I have breathed within thee a breath of My own spirit, that you mayest be My lover.”

“Out of the clay of love I molded thee, how dost thou busy thyself with another? Turn thy sight unto thyself that thou mayest find Me standing within thee, mighty, powerful and self-subsisting."
