Kiwanis honors Kamiak Student of the Month
The Kiwanis Club of Mukilteo honors Kamiak High School’s Joel Bervell as Student of the Month.
Joel Bervell is an exceptional senior at Kamiak. He has been an active member of the Kamiak Key Club since his freshman year, culminating in the appointment from his fellow clubbers as this year’s Bulletin Editor.
His school activities are numerous, but to name a few; he’s this year’s ASB President, was 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grade class president, Multicultural Club President, Link Leader, KHS Site Council member, Speech and Debate, Knights in Action, One Voice: Christian Club, Leadership Class, Academic Coach and Peer Tutor.
Bill Costello, AP English teacher, wrote, “Joel is a natural leader. His concern for others, willingness to put in effort, and obvious understanding of what it takes to achieve a goal engenders confidence in those around him.
“As a student in Senior AP English Literature, he has shown keen insight, a sophisticated writing style, and the ability to connect theoretical concepts to the real world. He’s a gem.”
Joel has a 3.77 GPA and has taken 14 Honors/and or AP classes. His efforts have earned him a class standing of 49 in a class of 500.
His academic performance has earned him membership into the National Honors Society, and the AP Scholar with Distinction award.
Tabby Thompson, AP Biology teacher, said, “Joel is an outstanding student in many ways. His achievements in the classroom are just a small example of his abilities. He is not only a leader in my AP Biology class but also the school. He rallies students to volunteer to help those who are in need locally and globally. Joel is very deserving of this recognition.”
Joel’s leadership qualities have transcended globally as well. He tutors middle school students, is a teen advisor for the Mukilteo Library, chosen to be a leader for the Global Citizens Corps by Mercy Corps, ushers for his church, is a member of the Truelife choir, and is an advanced level pianist and competitor.
In addition, he is the Co-Founder/ President of “Hugs for Ghana”, a student run Non-profit 501(c) 3.
Math teacher Jeremy Schillinger wrote, “Joel is one of the finest young men at Kamiak. He is an asset to our school, community, and my class. Each day, he comes to class prepared, willing to learn, help others, and ask clarifying questions. He embodies everything we hope for in an individual graduating from Kamiak.”
Joel has received many honors and awards; Prudential Spirit of Community distinguished finalist, winner of Bank of America Student Leaders Program, Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Regional winner, Nordstrom 104U Scholarship winner, President’s Volunteer Service Award, and many, many more.
Megan Adams, ASB Advisor for Kamiak, wrote, “I’ve never met anyone with as many accolades as Joel Bervell; unless there are high school students out there who simply never sleep, I can’t imagine there are many others whose resumes and accomplishments come close to his caliber.”
