Letter: America should not be the world’s sanctuary

Feb 15, 2017

In response to the Feb. 8 letter to the editor, “Let’s make Mukilteo a sanctuary city,” the author is openly calling for anarchy. Let’s not listen to our elected government officials and, instead, why don’t we just do whatever we feel like doing. Is that what we really want?

Donald Trump was elected President of the United States of America and not the President of the world. We cannot afford to take care of everyone who wants to come and live here. No country can afford that. For decades, the U.S. has acted like a rich uncle to the world, but much it was borrowed money. It’s high time our President started acting, for a change, on behalf of Americans and not illegals.

In case you asked, yes, I emigrated to the U.S. from a Communist country over 45 years ago. And, yes, I fully appreciate the freedoms and the material benefits that this country has afforded me.

But, guess what – I entered the U.S. legally. It took a long time because of the immigrant quotas, but it was well worth the wait.

I agree with you Christopher. It bothers me when we protect those that break the law.

My family has an emigration story. I adopted two children from S. Korea and went through that long process of being approved by five different entities from both countries.

My daughter, now a high school counselor, has countless undocumented students whose families live in fear of deportation. Even when Obama offered sanctuary to them, they STILL remained in hiding because of their fears of government (as experienced in their country of origin.)

I don't know what the answers are, but I do know we shouldn't reward breaking the law. There's got to be a way to keep things above board and for those who live here to contribute in the same way citizens do.

Thanks for writing.
