Local tennis doubles teams fourth, seventh at state tournament
Several members of the Kamiak and Edmonds-Woodway girls tennis teams traveled east this weekend for the 4A state tournament.
The tournament, held May 30-31 at the COlumbia Basin Racquet Club and at Richland High School, featured Kamiak's Jenna Gilbert and Elizabeth Norris, as well as Edmonds-Woodway's Myint-Zu Kyaw and partner Hanna Rehnfeldt.
The Warriors team finished in fourth place overall, topping their Kamiak counterparts 6-0, 6-2 in the final match of the day. The duo from Kamiak finished in seventh place overall.
Kyaw and Rehnfeldt started the tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 win over a pair from Moses Lake, before falling to a duo from Camas 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket, Kyaw and Rehnfeldt beat Cindy Park and Crystal Lee of Thomas Jefferson 6-2, 6-4, before facing off against Kamiak.
Gilbert and Norris beat a pair from Mead in the first round on Friday, topping to duo 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. They lost to Inglemoor's Janae Chinn and Michaela Jendralova 6-4, 6-0 in the second round. In the consolation bracket, the Knights beat Eastmont's Abby Waterhouse and Awbrey May 6-2, 6-0 before facing the Warriors.
In the 4A girls singles event, Kamiak's Sally Park started the tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Eastmont's Janae Bickford. She lost to eventual second place finisher Sammi Hampton of Skyview 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.
Park finished the tournament with a loss to Ferris' Courtney Provan 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday.
As a team, Edmonds-Woodway finished in sixth place with eight points, tied with Ferris, while Kamiak was eighth overall with seven points.
