Mariner baseball | Spring sports previews
Coach: Peter VanderWeyest
Number of athletes: 35 in the program, 15 on varsity
Last season: The Marauders finished the regular season with a 1-19 record, beating Lynnwood last spring.
Strengths: “I'd say our strength is our defense,” said new head coach Peter VanderWeyest. “We have a very strong infield and up the middle we have three strong guys who are returning. Defensively, if we can get the pitchers to keep the ball down and get some ground balls we'll be ok. If we can score a few runs, we hope to give some of these teams a better battle than in the past.”
Focus: “We're focusing on just having competitive at bats. We want to be completive up here, getting good play coverage,” said the coach.
Captains: Senior Nick Smith and junior Tim Angelos
“We're a pretty young team last year, so we have a lot of our varsity guys returning. Most of them played varsity last year, so we should have some good experience,” said Smith.
“Obviously our goal is to win, but really we just want to improve especially for the young guys, getting them some wins and improving,” said Angelos.
Games to watch: “They probably get excited for Kamiak. That's always a good game,” said the coach.
The captains said they are excited to play Kamiak, but mostly just want to get back out on the field this season.
The Marauders will play at Kamiak on Thursday, April 3.
