Mariner boys basketball | Winter sports preview
Coach: Tom Jensen
Number of athletes: 36
Last season: The Marauders finished with an 11-11 record, finishing in the post season in the Wesco District tournament.
Strengths: “These guys love playing with each other, that’s definitely a strong point,” said head coach Tom Jensen. “Their willingness to work hard, and it’s a fun team to be around, there are no individuals.”
Focus: “Getting everything in,” said the coach. “We have 12 practices before our first game, and I have two returning varsity players, total, so getting everything in is a big deal. Getting these guys ready to execute against anything they could see.”
Leaders: Seniors Shawn Miguel, Andre Haghgoo and junior DeRhaun Mallett
The trio said they are working hard, helping the younger players learn the system. They all said their goal this season is to get better at every game and practice and improve as student-athletes on and off the court.
Games to watch: “I think we’re all looking forward to that first game coming back,” said the coach. “You’re always looking forward to that first game and seeing what you have. As a coach, I’m looking forward to the first practice after our first game because then I’ll have something to go out and say here’s what it was and here’s what we need to do to make a difference. I think the guys are all looking forward to league games.”
The team started the season against Everett on Dec. 3, and will play their first home game Friday, Dec. 6, against Shorewood at 7:15 p.m.
