A Mariner High School freshman has served as a page in the Washington State Senate during the eighth week of the 2017 Legislative Session.

During the week of Feb. 27, Hercis Hernandez, 15, listened to lectures from guest speakers and attended page school where pages create their own bills in a mock committee setting. Hernandez proposed legislation regarding secondhand smoking.

“I liked participating in mock,” Hernandez said. “This is the only place where you can do this.”

Sen. Marko Liias, D-Lynnwood, sponsored Hernandez’s week in the Legislature.

“We always enjoy hosting pages,” Liias said. “Hercis was no exception. I hope he enjoyed his time in Olympia.”

Hernandez encourages his peers to take advantage of this opportunity while they still can and apply early to make sure they can reserve a spot.

“Everyone should do this,” Hernandez said. “It is a week you will never forget.”
