Mariner girls tennis | Spring sports previews
Coach: Rich Mar
Number of athletes: 36 in the program, 14 on varsity
Last season: The Marauders finished 8-8 in the regular season.
Strengths: “In the past two years we've had a strong No. 1, which for Mariner being a lower socioeconomic school, having a strong No. 1 is great,” said returning head coach Rich Mar. “Angela (Moniaga) is probably one of the top four or five players in the districts. It's a unique pleasure to have.”
Focus: “Just getting some of the new girls up to speed from JV,” said the coach. “We had four seniors graduate and an exchange student who is gone, so just rebuilding a little bit. We have a good core of seniors who are helping that transition.”
Captains: Seniors Angela Moniaga, Rachel Do and Puneet Dhaliwal
The captains said the team is dedicated this season, and excited to get playing.
“A majority of us are returning players so there is a lot of passion from when we started. I honestly see the passion on the court,” said Do.
“We haven't had a winning season for a while,” said Moniaga. “Our goal is just to get better each year. Everyone here is committed to getting better.”
Games to watch: “We have a lot of goals that we set. We want to have a winning season, get at least nine wins, last year we had eight which is pretty good. We'd like to have a winning season. We just want to be competitive in all of them,” said the coach.
The captains said they always get excited to play Kamiak and Jackson, two tough teams.
The Marauders will host Jackson on Tuesday, March 25 and will take on Kamiak on April 3.
