Mariner, Kamiak compete at 4A state track championships
The Mariner and Kamiak track and field teams sent several athletes to the 4A state track meet over the weekend at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
Two members of the Kamiak boys team earned spots on the podium, after placing in the top eight in their events on Saturday.
“We had a good time at the meet this past weekend,” said Kamiak head coach Paul Kirkpatrick. “This year’s seniors worked hard to get to this point. Chris Moreton and Jacob Kraus making the podium and medaling capped off a successful season.”
Kraus finished in eighth overall in the boys 4A long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 2.25. Teammate and fellow senior Moreton finished in fourth overall in the 4A 400-meter race in 49.51 seconds.
Kirkpatrick said the seniors made up the bulk of the team this year, which helped propel many to the post season.
“The seniors have been the core of the team for four years,” said the coach. “As freshmen they were running, throwing and jumping at the varsity level and took their lumps competing against juniors and seniors.
“That experience helped them this year, as they were able to go up against the best teams in the state and be competitive. By working hard each day and coming to the meets ready to compete, they set a positive example for the underclassmen and were strong leaders. They also set a standard for the team to strive for in the coming seasons.”
Kamiak's 4x400 relay team of Kraus, Sam Cha, Gunnar Olson and Moreton were 12th in the prelims in 3:27.65. The Knights boys 4x100 relay team of Austin Hall, Kraus, Tom Batie and Moreton were 13th in the prelims in 44.34.
Kraus also finished in 13th place in the boys 4A 200-meter race in 22.40. Senior Tyler Webley was 16th overall in the javelin, throwing for 137-08.
Kamiak freshman Katherine Slack finished in 11th place in the girls 4A 800-meter prelim race in 2:18.82.
Mariner's Octayvien Sapp, who won the district title in the shot put, finished in 12th place overall at state with a throw of 47 feet, 11 inches. Fellow Marauder teammate, senior Jose Irizarry, competed in the 4A 300-meter hurdles race, finishing the preliminary event in 11th place with a time of 40.69.
The Kamiak boys team finished in 27th place with six points.
