Mariner off to strong start | WrestlingMarauders take second at Lynnwood Invite
Mariner came up just short of winning its seventh straight dual meet.
Jackson edged the Marauders 45-36 in a Wesco 4A dual meet Dec. 15 at Mariner High School.
“We had about five kids out of the lineup, but they also had some kids out,” Marauders coach Carl Wilkins said. “It could have gone either way. … They’ve got good kids who work hard just like we’ve got good kids who work hard. It was a good night of high school wrestling.”
Five Marauders posted pins – Joseph Adee (132 pounds), RJ Fry (138), Austin Kaytor (182), Alex Tran (220) and Cayden Herbert (285). In the final match of the night, Jackson’s Cole Anderson, a state placer, defeated Mariner’s Josh Giron 4-3 in the 152-pound match.
“He wrestled him tough,” Wilkins said of Mariner’s co-captain.
Two days later, Giron rebounded to take first place in the 145 division at the Lynnwood Classic. Giron defeated Kamiak’s Guage Holland 15-2 in the finals. Other first place finishers for Mariner were RJ Fry (138) and Cayden Herbert (220). Fry won a 23-9 decision over Shorecrest’s Connor Block, while Herbert pinned Kamiak’s Drew Kindle in 1 minutes, 46 seconds.
Also placing for the Marauders were Payton Britton (second at 106), Julio Lopez (third at 113), Jonathan Clark (fourth at 126), Joseph Adee (fourth at 132) and Alex Tran (third at 285).
Mariner finished second in the team competition, scoring 140 points behind tournament winner Kamiak, which had 189.
“Everybody is improving,” Wilkins said. “Overall, the team is doing exactly what we want them to do.”
