Mariner principal is Humanitarian of the Year
Principal Brent Kline will be presented the first ever Humanitarian of the Year Award by the Unity Church in Lynnwood for his achievements at Mariner High School.
Kline was named 2013 Principal of the Year by the Association of Washington State Principals, and in 2012 he was named WESCO Principal of the Year.
Kline, who took office in 2003, has been the school's longest serving principal. He has focused primarily on improving students' academic skills.
Most recently, the school was named a School of Distinction for reading and math in 2011 and received the 2013 Washington Achievement Award for Language Arts.
Although the poverty rate has climbed to 67 percent at Mariner, the academic achievement rate has improved equally during Klines' tenure, according to the Mukilteo School District.
Unity Church in Lynnwood’s Humanitarian Team recently learned of the needs at Mariner.
Thinking of the idea it takes a village to raise a child, the Adopt-A-School branch was formed from the main Humanitarian Team to raise the funds to buy graphing calculators and other school supplies for its students.
About 36 calculators and other supplies will be distributed during National Teacher Appreciation Week.
Unity Church in Lynnwood will honor Kline with the humanitarian award on Mother's Day, May 12, during the 10 a.m. service. A small reception will follow in Fellowship Hall.
The church is at 16727 Alderwood Mall Pkwy. in Lynnwood.
