Mariner’s Valdez-Barajas named Rotary’s top February student
The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club has named Mariner High School senior Aurelio Valdez-Barajas its Student of the Month for February.
Valdez-Barajas is the son of Carlos and Veronica Valdez. He has a sister, Mariajose, and a brother, Carlos.
Valdez-Barajas has a 3.08 GPA and is ranked 223rd of 484 seniors at Mariner High School.
Valdez-Barajas is involved in Mariner Leadership and DECA, and is helping put together the Mariner Senior Slide Show. He has also performed twice in the Marauder’s spectacular Martin Luther King Day assembly.
Outside of school, Valdez-Barajas has organized Latino Day, helped feed the homeless during Thanksgiving the last two years and serves as a minister at his church. His hobbies are reading and writing, and he feels strongly about putting others first.
“Aurelio consistently creates quality work,” Mariner High school social studies teacher David Broadhead said. “In the classroom, he is a willing participant and has the ability to raise the standard for those around him. Aurelio is constantly trying to improve and works very hard to do so. He is insightful and honest about his own learning and can clearly identify areas in which he needs to grow. With his sense of humor and insight, Aurelio is a wonderful addition to my class.”
After graduation in June, Valdez-Barajas plans on attending the University of Washington to become a social studies teacher.
The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. at
Shawn O’Donnell’s American Grill & Irish Pub, 122 128th St. SE in Everett. For more information, visit www.semr.org.
