Mariner’s Loni Tra battled hard but ended up falling to Jackson’s Maheen Jamshidpour 7-5, 6-3 in a Wesco 4A match between the two school’s No. 1 singles players.

“It was definitely one of the tougher matches, but I had a lot of fun playing,” Tra said. “We got to rally for a pretty long time. It was a good experience.”

The match was a clash of styles.

Jamshidpour, who had lost only one league match coming into Friday’s clash, considers herself more of a power player, who likes to hit the ball hard. Tra is a finesse player.

“I would consider myself more of a player that angles balls instead of power all the time,” Tra said.

Tra’s angle game was effective in the first set. But Jamshidpour still was able to pull out the first set.

Tra is hoping for more dry weather, so that she can have more practices and matches. She said she is looking for more experience playing opponents with different strategies.

After going playing doubles at last year’s district tournament, Tra plans to go singles this year, her senior season.

The Marauders, who lost the other six matches against Jackson, are a young team with promise.

“There are a lot of juniors and sophomores that are just moving up to varsity,” Tra said.
