Mariner track and field | Spring sports previews
Coach: Dave McFadden (boys) Mitchell Elias (girls)
Number of athletes: 100 on both teams
Last season: Both the boys and girls teams finished 0-6 during the regular season, but sent several team members to the post season, including the district meet.
Strengths: “Right now we have so many new kids, on the girls side, we actually have some decent young girls who are going to give us some depth,” said boys head coach Dave McFadden. On the boys team, he said there are a solid group of returners who he expects to have solid seasons.
Focus: “Figuring out who we have and what they can do,” said McFadden. “Our first week we have two relay meets so that becomes really interesting. We stress going out and having fun and doing the best you can.”
Leaders: Senior Jose Irizarry, Cassie Sevigny, Joshua Williamson, and juniors Dyonte Law, Greogry Whitaker and Octayvien Sapp
The team leaders this season said they are excited to get going and hope to win some meets this year. They said the boys team especially will be strong and that they want everyone to keep improving all season long.
Games to watch: “Everything for us is built on getting to May as healthy as we can,” said the coach. “It’s about being healthy in May.”
The Marauders start the season with the Seattle Academy Relays on Saturday, March 22 and will compete at Everett on March 27.
