Mariner wrestling | Winter sports preview
Coach: Carl Wilkins
Number of athletes: 35
Last season: The Marauders finished the regular season with an 8-4 record.
Strengths: “We’ve got some good, young kids coming in from our middle school programs,” said head coach Carl Wilkins. “We’re a little more athletic this year. We’re still fairly young, but some good kids coming back from last year’s team.”
Focus: “Just trying to make that transition to varsity level wrestling,” said the coach. “It’s an aggressive step to go from either not wrestling or middle school to high school. It’s just harder; it’s a longer season, more practices and there is just more to it.”
Captains: Senior Edgars Plornish and junior Daniel Huynh.
The captains said the team is working hard early in the season, and looking good. They both said they’d like to do well in the league matches, and have a shot at the league title.
Meet to watch: “We’re really looking forward to our league duals this year. We’d like to represent ourselves better in our league competitions,” said Wilkins. “We’ve had less than full lineups – that always hurts when you’re giving away points. To be able to fill the weight classes, and not to just fill them but to put in guys with experience.”
The Marauders will start the season with a home double dual match against Mountain View and Auburn Mountainview on Friday, Dec. 6, starting at 5:15 p.m.
