Mukilteo 5th graders win student essay contest | School brief

Four Mukilteo Elementary fifth graders were local winners of the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars student essay contest.

Kunal Renjen placed first in the competition, Magge Wall finished in second place, and Ashley Wang and Haley Kniest were runners-up.

VFW Post #8870 recognized the winners at its Jan. 10 meeting. Each of the students read their winning essays and were presented an award. They were accompanied by their teacher, Sue Idso.

First place won $100, second place won $50 and the runners-up received $25 each.

The theme for this year’s national Youth Essay contest was “My American Hero is….?” The contest is open to elementary school students in third, fourth and fifth grades.

The post’s student essay competition is coordinated by James “Rock” Roth, who also serves as the post chaplain.

The winning essays have been forwarded to the Washington State VFW for consideration at the district and state levels.
