A team of six Mukilteo middle and elementary school students is headed to the Destination Imagination Global Finals tournament for the third time in four years, and this year they plan to take first place.

“This year, we are hoping to win at globals,” team manager Thangadurai Joshwa said. “If all things go well with no technical issues, we are confident we can win this year.”

The Infinite Creative Crew, as the team is called, took fourth place overall at globals in 2014. In 2015, the team took 13th place overall. In 2016, the team took first place in the North Sound Regional competition and second place in the Washington state competition, but was unable to travel to globals.

This year, the team is one of nine teams in the state to make it to globals, which will be held from May 24-27 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Of 10 teams from Mukilteo that competed in the North Sound Regional Tournament, three moved on to the April 1 state tournament held at Eastmont Junior High School in East Wenatchee. Aside from the Infinite Creative Crew, which is organized through Joshwa’s company DTJ Systems, the other two Mukilteo teams to make state were Those People from Mukilteo Elementary and Cinco-headed Imagininjas from Columbia Elementary.

Joshwa’s team was the only Mukilteo team to advance to globals, along with eight other teams from the North Sound region. A total of 27 teams from around the state are moving on to globals after 102 teams competed in three levels – elementary, middle and secondary.

Over the past few years, the Infinite Creative Crew has earned special awards at regional competitions, including the Da Vinci Award, the Spirit of DI Award and the Renaissance Award. This year, the team also won the Renaissance Award at the state tournament in recognition of its outstanding design, engineering and performance.
