The 8th grade Mukilteo Knights select basketball team out played their competition in six consecutive games under a scorching 92-degree sun in Spokane June 29-30.

The Knights erased a black shirted team from Idaho who put them in the losers bracket hours earlier.

Next, Mukilteo beat the undefeated blue shirts from Portland, but that wouldn't be enough. In double elimination and with one loss each, a rematch would decide the champion.

A 15-minute break showed anxious parents with spray misters, umbrellas wet towels and prayers.

Once started, Mukilteo fell behind Portland 1-7. With two heat exhausted players trading out for one another, the team fought back slowly. The march continued up to the final whistle.

Mukilteo 18, Portland 16. The boys rewarded six-year coach Craig Tuttle with a conclusive display of guts and character.

Hoopfest is the largest 3-on-3 basketball competition in the world with 7,070 teams participating, 27,896 players, 492 brackets and 42 city blocks of courts.
