Mukilteo ranks 14th in highest DUI costs
The city of Mukilteo has the 14th highest costs associated with DUI charges in Washington state.
Nerdwallet.com recently released a study ranking Washington cities by the “true cost” of getting a DUI.
The true cost of a DUI conviction in Mukilteo can range from a minimum of $6,832.40 to a maximum of $10.891.90.
The study considered the following costs: the fine, lawyer’s fees, ignition interlock device fees and insurance premium increases.
State-mandated fines can vary from a minimum of $940.50 for first-time offenders with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 to the maximum of $5,000.
In 2013, the average fine imposed for all convictions was $3,700, according to Washington’s Administrative Office of the Courts, and offenders will pay an average of $2,000 in lawyers’ fees, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Drivers that want to get back on the road after a DUI conviction are required to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle.
The commission estimates the cost of the device to be about $1,300 for the first year, and first-time offenders are required to have the device for a minimum of one year.
According to Nerdwallet, Mukilteo drivers with clean records pay an average cost of $946.58 for car insurance each year, but after receiving a DUI, Mukilteo drivers can expect annual car insurance rates to increase by $518.38.
That’s 54.76 percent. The increases last for five years after receiving a DUI, which means the average Mukilteo driver will pay an additional $2,591.90 for insurance.
