Nominate the next Citizen of the Year

May 08, 2013

It’s that time of year when judges have their eye out for the next Citizen of the Year.

The purpose of the Kiwanis-sponsored award is simple: to recognize a citizen whose impact on the Mukilteo community has been significant and enduring.

The recipient’s contribution must be non-political. Also, anyone currently running for political office is ineligible.

Recipients of the award receive no money or titular duties; they’re simply recognized for their outstanding contributions.

The public is encouraged to nominate qualified citizens. Some years the committee receives a large number of nominees, other years relatively few.

Fill out a nomination form and submit it along with your letter(s) explaining to the Selection Committee why you think the individual(s) should be the next recipient.

The committee is made up of past Citizens of the Year and is sponsored by the Mukilteo Kiwanis Club.

The deadline for this year’s nominations is June 20. The nomination form and directions can be found in the Beacon.

Once a winner is selected, that citizen is featured as guest of honor in the Lighthouse Festival parade on Sept. 13, and is recognized that same afternoon in a ceremony at which the mayor presents a plaque heralding the accomplishment.

The winning name is added to larger plaques located in the Rosehill Community Center, which contain the names of all past Citizen of the Year honorees.
