The Mukilteo Elementary invites the Mukilteo School District community to an open house in honor of Principal Pat Cushing, who will be retiring on June 30.

The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, in the Mukilteo Elementary gym. It is sponsored by the school’s PTSA.

Under Cushing’s steady leadership, Mukilteo Elementary has thrived. It was named a Washington School of Distinction in 2009, 2010, and 2011, an award that is given to the top 5 percent of schools based on outstanding improvement in student achievement.

Cushing also introduced Mukilteo Elementary, and the Mukilteo School District, to the “Leader in Me” education program, which is based on the book “7 Habits of Happy Kids” by Sean Covey.

This innovative program is a school-wide initiative that emphasizes principles of personal leadership and responsibility.

In recognition of Mukilteo Elementary's outstanding implementation of the Leader in Me Program, the Franklin Covey Company named it a “Lighthouse School” in 2012. Only 23 other schools in the world have achieved this status.

As principal, Cushing has been an inspiration to the staff. She is known for celebrating learning, growth, and self-confidence in the school community, and always putting students first.

Current and past Mukilteo Elementary families have appreciated her kind and thoughtful guidance, as well as her keen understanding of individual students and their families. She is a constant presence at all school functions, and other community events.

One third grader put it best when she wrote of Cushing: “When she comes into our classroom, the whole class smiles.”

Cushing has been principal at Mukilteo Elementary since July 2003.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Montana College in 1972, her master’s degree from the University of Connecticut in 1990, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from the University of New Hampshire in 1997.

Before coming to Mukilteo Elementary, she taught in Montana, served as an Enrichment and Gifted Education coordinator in Connecticut and New Hampshire, and was both an assistant principal and a principal in New Hampshire.

The Open House is a drop-in event that is open to all members of the community. Light refreshments will be served. Please stop by to celebrate Pat’s career at Mukilteo Elementary and wish her well on her next adventures.
