The Mukilteo Way Garden Club has awarded its annual horticulture scholarship to a city Public Works employee.

Amber Shaffer was presented the $750 scholarship at the club’s July 15 meeting by President Diane Tinsley. The scholarship goes toward horticulture studies at Edmonds Community College.

Shaffer has been in landscape maintenance for 10 years.  A native of Oregon, she moved to Everett a year ago and began working for Mukilteo’s Public Works Department in June.

She told club members that she applied for the scholarship to continue gaining knowledge in her field.

She has already completed a community gardener program at Oregon State University and has become a master gardener in Washington.

Shaffer is the third Public Works employee to receive the scholarship since 2009. The Mukilteo Way Garden Club established the horticulture scholarship in 2007 with the proceeds from the first Mukilteo Garden and Quilt Tour.

The biennial tours provide funds for the annual scholarship. The next tour is scheduled for July 2015.
