Rotary names Slack its February student of the month
The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club has named Kamiak High School senior Katherine Slack its Student of the Month for February.
Slack is an AP Scholar with Honors. She has a 4.0 GPA and is ranked third out of 489 students at Kamiak. She was a National Merit Finalist, and a Kamiak Orchestra Officer playing the viola since her sophomore year.
Katherine was captain of the Knights Cross Country team, competing in state competition in 2015 and 2016. Slack received the Cross Country Most Inspirational Award during her junior year. At the 2016 state meet, Slack ran the 5K race with one shoe after her shoe was accidentally stepped on by another runner and fell off.
Slack was also a member of Kamiak’s Track team, qualifying for state in 2014 and 2016. She received Kamiak Track’s Most Inspirational Award in her freshman, sophomore, and junior years.
Slack has volunteered for the Mukilteo Elementary Orchestra at rehearsals after school. This spring, she will be traveling with the Kamiak Orchestra to Berlin, Germany.
Slack has helped a special needs baseball team in Edmonds during their practices and games. She was also involved with an FC Edmonds girls soccer team, helping at their practices.
Outside of class, Slack like to run. She ran over 400 miles last summer.
“Having known her for four years as a runner on the cross country and track teams, I’ve been fortunate to have her as a student this year in AP Government and Politics,” said Charles N. LeWarne, AP U.S. History and AP U.S. Government and Politics teacher at Kamiak High School.
“She is intelligent, focused, dedicated and a tremendous competitor who is also supportive of those around her. She is one of the top individuals I’ve been fortunate to work with in my 27 years of teaching and coaching.”
After graduation, Slack plans on attending the University of Washington, Santa Clara University, or Montana State University, majoring in math or sciences.
