Stop complaining, Seahawks fans | Taking Stock
Seahawk fans are again disappointed by the team’s failure to advance beyond the divisional round of the playoffs. Fans in most cities would think us spoiled.
Eight teams haven't made the playoffs even once in the last five years, and eight teams that have made the playoffs haven't won a game. Sixteen teams haven't won even one playoff game in five years.
Here are some more stats: Only three teams – the Seahawks, Packers, and Patriots – have been in the playoffs each year from 2012 through 2016. Of those three, the Patriots and Seahawks have at least one win every year. Seattle has won two-thirds of its playoff games in the last five years, exceeded only by the Patriots and Ravens, and the Ravens haven't made the playoffs in three of the last five years.
Only three teams have been to the Super Bowl more than once in the last five years. The Seahawks, Patriots, and Broncos have each been to the Super Bowl twice. Only four other teams have been there once each.
Teams in the NFC West division have advanced to the NFC Championship game five times in the last five years, and in three of those years the NFC West team advanced to the Super Bowl. The NFC South Division has had three teams in the NFC Championship game in the last five years.
The NFC North division has had two teams in the NFC Championship game in five years, but the NFC East has not been represented in the NFC Championship game during the same time.
The NFC Championship game has been played twice in Seattle, twice in Atlanta and once in Charlotte in five years.
Teams in the AFC East have advanced to the AFC Championship game five times in five years. It was the Patriots every time. The AFC North has been represented in the AFC Championship game twice. The AFC West has had a team in the AFC championship game twice and advanced to the Super Bowl both times.
The AFC South has had a team in the AFC Championship game once in five years. The AFC Championship game has been played in Denver twice in five years, and in Foxborough three times. The visiting team has advanced twice, the home team three times.
So, a lot of numbers.
Seattle has not been suffering through bad times when compared to the rest of the NFL. My message to Seahawks fans would be the same as Aaron Rodgers gave to distraught Packers fans a couple of years ago: R-E-L-A-X.
To sum up, one-quarter of the NFL, eight teams, haven't been in the playoffs from 2012 through 2016. One-half of the NFL, 16 teams, haven't won a playoff game. More than three-quarters of the NFL, 25 teams, haven't been to the Super Bowl.
Seattle has been blessed with success. Stop complaining and enjoy.
