Tolerance is not enough | Letter

Dec 11, 2013

We need to move beyond "tolerance,” [“Community invited to celebrate Human Rights Day,” The Beacon, Online, Nov. 29].

While this is an excellent article in an excellent cause, the word "tolerance" implies "putting up with" and thus putting up with something disagreeable or inferior.

In social issues, that is, where we speak of equal human rights for all, regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation or religion, “tolerance” is not enough.  We need acceptance.

Out of many, we are one.
