Whidbey Island’s free Concerts in the Park series kicks off this week with The Joy Mills Band.

The country music band will perform on Batting Cage Stage at Community Park in Langley for the first time.

The Joy Mills Band will be playing a nonstop set from 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, at the park at 5495 Maxwelton Rd. as the first show of the 2014 Concerts in the Park series, sponsored by the South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District.

Here’s the complete schedule for the concert series:

July 31: No concert

Aug. 7: Dirty Boy Lloyd (Rock & Roll)

With influences from early country and roots music, the Joy Mills Band will play upbeat tunes, lyrical ballads and soulful country songs, all set against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest.

The Joy Mills Band’s “Trick of the Eye” was named as one of Seattle’s Top Country Albums of 2012.

Mills has garnered extensive reviews, chart-listings and favor here and abroad as a soloist, as singer with The Starlings, and now as leader of this quartet featuring: Tom Parker on bass, Lucien LaMotte on pedal steel and electric guitar, and Mike McDermott on drums.

After a 2-week European tour in 2013, they have returned to the studio to complete their second full-length album due out in spring 2014.

"Call it lilt with an edge," said a reviewer in the UK. Maverick Magazine calls it “organic country…both delicate and edgy… For the lo-fi country enthusiast.”
