Be courteous on lighthouse grounds | Letter

Editor, The Beacon:

Why do we have so many rules and regulations? Because of thoughtless, inconsiderate and selfish people!

I’ve been working at the lighthouse since the Mukilteo Historical Society acquired access in 1992. At that time, there were no rules and regulations. Ninety-nine percent of people are caring, thoughtful and considerate – but it’s that tiny percentage that changes everything.

First, no food and drinks. Why? Because people left rubbish all of the grounds. Second, no smoking on the premises to avoid fire damage to special historical buildings – and “butts.”

Now, another problem. Anyone who knows me knows I love animals (some people I have trouble with). Pets and children are all welcome in the fenced-in area, but is it fair to let your dog do his natural thing without the owner cleaning up? Children love to roll on the beautiful lawns.

After Sunday’s opening time, one of our members went over the grounds and cleaned “dog mess.”

Please be considerate of others and we wouldn’t need more “R&Rs.”

Mim Loree,
