Mariner beats Bulldogs for 1st league victory | Boys basketball

A strong first half performance was instrumental in Mariner’s first league victory.

Senior Fama Toure scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Marauders to a 45-42 win over Mount Vernon in a Wesco 4A boys basketball game Friday, Jan. 19, at Mount Vernon High School.

Three other Mariner players – Dwan Mallet, Simon Fanuel and Tony MacArthur – scored 6 points in a balanced offensive attack.

Mariner (1-8 in the league, 3-12 overall) took a 12-9 lead after the first quarter and extended the advantage to 25-17 at halftime. Mount Vernon outscored the Marauders 25-20 in the second half to close to within 3 points by the end of Friday’s contest.

Earlier in the week, Mariner lost 54-51 to second place Monroe on Monday, Jan. 15, at Mariner High School.

The Marauders fell behind 28-22 at halftime and weren’t able to make up the 6-point deficit in the second half.

Topaziyon Kipabut scored a team-high 16 points for Mariner. Edwin Bouah finished with 11 points and Mallet had 10 points.

The Marauders face district rival Kamiak at 6:15 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 24 at Mariner High School.
