Packs For Kids is a local non-profit 501(c)3 that meets the needs of hungry school children in the Mukilteo School District. This program is an effort to ensure families have access to nutritious meals on the weekends.

Packs will have its second annual “Spaghetti Dinner” at Rosehill Community Center on Saturday, April 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a raffle of UW, Seahawks, and WSU baskets, a chocolates and champagne basket, and many more.

A Silent Auction offers a seven-night Worldmark Wyndham Resort vacation, a car package from Everett Chevrolet, beautiful art from Hawaii, a designer watch set and much more. Entertainment will be provided by Clique Photobooth.

Packs For Kids was founded in 2012 by Oran Smith-Osterman to provide food supplements for children and families living in food insecure households in the school district. Plain, discreet backpacks are collected from local businesses and donor families for the children to carry home packs filled with non-perishable food on Friday to support their families through the weekend.  Statistics show that children who are hungry are less attentive, unable to learn and often disruptive in the classroom.

“From the support of the Kiwanis Club of Mukilteo, Campbells-StockPot Foods and many other generous people in the community, our program has grown from helping students in one school to now supporting seven schools,” said Smith-Osterman. “We are able to serve children at Horizon, Fairmount, Discovery and Mukilteo Elementary schools, Explorer and Olympic View Middle Schools and Mariner High School so that every child arrives at school on Monday ready to learn.”

Students participating in the Packs For Kids program are selected by school counselors, Dean of Students and administrators based on their families’ need.

The motto of Packs For Kids is “Helping one child at a time: with the hope of helping many.”

Funds earned from this event will purchase additional non-perishable food that will allow Packs For Kids to send filled backpacks home for the remainder of the school year.
