I had the opportunity to stop by Academic Link’s Learning Lab at Olympic View Middle School last week to see how the lab runs.

Founder Jan Link, as well as volunteer Larry Wewel, introduced me to the few dozen sixth-grade students who were using the time after school to catch up on late work, do their homework, and study for the state standardized test.

Link, a Mukilteo resident, created the Learning Lab to follow an entire grade class of students throughout their middle school tenure, and to ensure that they were getting As, Bs, and Cs in their coursework, as well as passing the English and math sections of the standardized test.

Academic Link hosted an educational gala fundraiser at the Historic Flight Foundation recently to raise money for the OV learning lab, as well as the creation of one in the Edmonds School District at Alderwood Middle School, and one in Kennewick. She was awarded a trophy that reads, “Saving the world, one student at a time,” which she proudly accepted.

OV principal Devin McClane stopped by for some photos with Link and the kids, who were clearly enthusiastic about their time in the Learning Lab.
