Don’t take FAA sham lying down

By Vicki Derks | Jan 28, 2010

Thank you to the 500 plus that turned out for the FAA Environmental Assessment review at Kamiak high school last week.

Your passion and energy was amazing.

Unfortunately, that is not enough. As was mentioned by several of the speakers, these meetings are a sham, simply a means for the FAA to put a check in the box next to "hear from the stooges."

Your words while strong and passionate reverberated off of empty walls that night.

To put meaning behind them requires us to take the next step and contact our elected officials. Contact Aaron Reardon's office. Let Patty Murray, Rick Larson and Marko Liias know how you feel.

In the near 14 years that I have lived in this community, this is the single most important issue to challenge our way of life.

The first flight of the 787 was beautiful, and I am very thankful that I was on the front row to watch her fly, but that event, while important to our community, pales in comparison to the change that will occur in our beautiful community should passenger service be approved at Paine Field.

Many, most of whom who hail from Everett and beyond, are under the false assumption that this is a Mukilteo problem. They call us "spoiled little rich brats" for voicing our objections.

The reality is far different. The impact on the entire community, its tax base and quality of life will be far-reaching.

The true impact will not be felt for 10-15 years. Unfortunately, by then it will be far too late and far too meaningless to say "I TOLD YOU SO!"

Now is the time, THE ONLY TIME we have to make a difference. If you care at all, let your voices be heard. LOUD, CLEAR, REPEATEDLY.

Get mad. Get passionate. Remind our elected servants that the little anomaly that occurred in Massachusetts last week could just as easily happen in Washington state and Snohomish County.

You don't have to take this shell game they are playing. At least not lying down.
