Award-winning artist Lonni Rae Flowers has a love of nature that comes through in her paintings, scarves and jewelry.

This month, Gallery North in downtown Edmonds is featuring more than 30 of Flowers’ works of art, including richly colored paintings in watercolor, silk and acrylic, as well as hand-painted silk scarves and unique jewelry creations.

The exhibit – “Flora, Fauna, Land and Sea” – features many insights into the artist’s inspirations for creativity. She often captures the beauty of the colorful flowers and trees of the Pacific Northwest in her paintings. As subjects, animals are her first love, and she strives to capture the individuality of each one.

“Eyes are the most important part of every animal’s expression, so I always begin with them,” Flowers said.

Her travels have also inspired her love of the land and all types of waterways. The artist says she is fascinated by the way the light changes and by the motion of water everywhere.

After earning a bachelor of art degree from Colorado State University, Flowers worked as assistant art director for a television station and art director in several advertising agencies. She also taught high school English for 20 years.

Her move to the Pacific Northwest was prompted by several inspiring trips to Seattle. She is now a full-time artist and has been a watercolor instructor for 16 years.

This month’s exhibit includes many new pieces, including her African animals with abstract impressionist backgrounds and several impressionistic ocean scenes. Her approach to jewelry has taken an “earthier” direction, featuring handmade beads and natural stones as focal pieces.

Meet the artist and enjoy refreshments during an opening reception 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Gallery North, 410 Main Street in Edmonds. There will be a drawing for a uniquely-created gift of art.

Flowers will also be at Gallery North during the Edmonds Art Walk, 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17.
