The Beacon is excited to welcome Marie Haaland to its editorial staff as a reporting intern through August.

Haaland, 21, is a senior at Hofstra University on Long Island in New York. She grew up in Bothell near Mill Creek, and she graduated from Bothell High School in 2014.

Haaland began taking journalism courses during her sophomore year. Soon after, she began writing and editing for her school newspaper, The Hofstra Chronicle.

“While taking my first journalism class, I realized it was a solid combination of many of my interests,” Haaland said. “I've always been passionate about writing and editing, and cultivated an interest in photography while in high school.”

Much of her writing for the student newspaper has focused on coverage of events and speakers, and she’s served as the paper’s chief copy editor for nearly a year.

“My university held the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump at the end of September, and I was lucky enough to work with Newsday to cover the event,” she said. “With this internship, I'm hoping to branch out and write varying types of articles, and to gain more experience interviewing people.”

Haaland said she’s not yet sure where she’ll end up after graduation, but hopes to continue reporting and following her passions. While interning with the Beacon, she can be reached at or 425-347-5634 ext. 236.
