This year, for the first time, children will get to meet sugar-loving Buddy the Elf at Mukilteo’s tree lighting.

The Holiday Open House and Tree Lighting is schedule for 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave.

The lighthouse and Mukilteo Yacht Club boat parade will be lit at 5:15 p.m. The tree lighting in Old Town is scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

This is the third year the Mukilteo Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event as an open house, so that there is no need for tickets and more available parking.

“It’s flexible, come and go, so it’s more relaxed,” said Shannon McCarty, executive director of the chamber. “I think folks enjoy the open house format.”

In addition to the activities, special guests Buddy the Elf and Santa Claus will be available for pictures. Don’t forget your camera!

Five holiday performances are scheduled in the Point Elliott Room. Family friendly activities will be set up in other rooms at Rosehill, including cookie decorating, card making and holiday arts and crafts. Refreshments will also be served.

Performances will run from 3:15-5:40 p.m. in 20-minute intervals, with time to transition between groups.

The performance schedule is as follows:

3:15-3:35 p.m. – Picnic Point Singing Panthers

• 3:45-4:05 p.m. – Serene Lake Elementary Choir

• 4:15-4:35 p.m. – Columbia Elementary Choir

• 4:45-5:05 p.m. – Olympic View Middle School Band

• 5:10-5:40 p.m. – Kamiak Barbershop Choirs

Mayor Joe Marine, Santa and Buddy the Elf will gather everyone out to the Rosehill plaza for the count down to the lighthouse lighting and tree lighting, starting at 5:40 p.m.

McCarty said the open house format is well received, and that she expects 2,000 people to attend this year’s. She said the switch in event programming was a welcomed change.

“Families enjoy watching the performances, decorating cookies and making crafts,” she said. “I think Buddy the Elf will add excitement and fun for everyone.”

Buddy the Elf is a character from the 2003 Christmas movie “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell.

Admission is free. No tickets necessary. Bring a canned food donation for the Mukilteo Food Bank.

The event is co-sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the city of Mukilteo.
