A Renton man was taken into police custody after stealing a car, firing shots in the parking lot of Dollar Tree on Mukilteo Speedway and driving the wrong way on I-5 Wednesday, Jan. 16.

The 38-year-old man reportedly stole a yellow taxi and exchanged shots in the Dollar Tree parking lot in the 13600 block of the Mukilteo Speedway, south of Mukilteo city limits.

Witnesses reportedly told the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office that the suspect exchanged shots with someone who was not the owner of the taxi.

Deputies responded to the area at roughly 1:45 p.m. Jan. 16, to search for the taxi and the suspect.

The vehicle was eventually located south of the Dollar Tree, near I-5, and officers began pursuing  the suspect.

At one point, the suspect drove the wrong way on I-5, which caused officers to temporarily call off the pursuit.

According to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, officers eventually began a pursuit a second time, which ended at the entrance of the southbound HOV lanes on I-5 in Northgate after the suspect crashed the vehicle.

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident, and there were no injuries.

At one point, all lanes of southbound I-5 traffic were blocked by the collision and the large police presence. Traffic was rerouted along the shoulder to get through, causing heavy traffic delays, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Twitter page.

All information is as of Tuesday morning. This is still an ongoing investigation, and this story will be updated as more information becomes available.
