Children’s memorial candle lighting service

Nov 29, 2017

Pointe of Grace Lutheran Church will be taking part in its second annual Compassionate Friends Worldwide candle lighting service on Dec. 10.

“Candles are lit around the globe by the parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling or friend of any child who has died,” Laura Crawford of Pointe of Grace said. “Our service in nonsectarian and open to the entire community. It is beautiful, quiet, with harp music, candles and poetry.”

According to Crawford, there will also be refreshments served after the ceremony and there will be support available for anyone who needs it.

“We welcome the community and surrounding communities for this special evening,” Crawford said.

The candle lighting service will start at 6:30 p.m. so those attending have a chance to get settled.

For those attending, it is recommended that you bring the name of the child you’re remembering, and you may also bring pictures or other momentos for comfort in the service.

According to Compassionate Friends Worldwide’s website, they believe this event is the largest mass candle lighting in the world.

This year’s candle lighting is CFW’s 21st annual Worldwide Candle Lighting.

It essentially creates a 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone. TCF’s candle lighting event started in 1997 but has since increased exponentially as word has spread throughout the world of the remembrance.

According to their website, hundreds of formal candle lighting events are held for this event and thousands more informal candle lightings are also conducted in homes as families gather remembrance of children who have died.

Local bereavement groups, churches, funeral homes, hospitals, hospices, schools, cemeteries and also community centers join the Compassionate Friends and their allied organizations. The services for this event have ranged in size from just a few people to nearly a thousand.

The address for Pointe of Grace is 5425 Harbour Pointe Blvd.
