The tournament recognizes the lasting impact of Long, a 2015 Kamiak graduate, and longtime Kamiak teacher and coach Frank Nickerson.

The eight teams at the second annual Jake Long Memorial Baseball tournament not only had to battle each other throughout the weekend but also Mother Nature.

In the end, all of the games scheduled were completed except the Sunday, June 10 championship game between Chaffey and Lakeside, which was postponed due to rain.

Ray Atkinson of the Northwest Bandits and one of the organizers of the tournament said that the plan is to reschedule the championship game at a future date to be determined. Atkinson added that he hopes to play the game at Kamiak High School.

Chaffey went 3-0 in pool play, opening with a 9-1 victory over Laces on Friday, June 8, and then defeating Showtime 11-2 and Ephrata 9-4 on Saturday, June, 9. Chaffey includes players from Mill Creek and Snohomish.

Lakeside went 2-1 in pool play. After dropping a 3-2 game to the Northwest Bandits, Lakeside edged the Tide 3-2 on Saturday, June 9. Lakeside then defeated Taylor 3-1 on Sunday, June 10.

The tournament was founded last year in partnership with Kamiak Athletics, the Kamiak Athletic Booster Club, the Northwest Bandits Baseball Club, the Seattle Tides Baseball Club, and Jake Long and Frank Nickerson’s families.

Long was a member of the Northwest Bandits.

Long was a 2015 Kamiak graduate and standout baseball player. Nickerson taught English and was a baseball coach at Kamiak High School.

All proceeds of the tournament go toward funding the Jake Long Memorial Scholarship, and the Frank Nickerson Memorial Scholarship, which are awarded on an annual basis to two deserving senior Kamiak baseball players.
