May’s featured artist at Gallery North in downtown Edmonds is award-winning Edmonds artist Kathleen A. Johnson. Her show, titled "Joyful Connections,” will feature her color-saturated and sometimes whimsical paintings of the flora and fauna of Edmonds.

Sometimes referred to as the “crow lady,” Kathleen often features crows and other birds in her paintings. She named her Edmonds-based business Two Crows Studio for two fledgling crows she encountered.

“I have always had an interest in birds, particularly crows,” she said. “I feel that they help keep humans in touch with the natural world.”

Over the years, Kathleen has used many art mediums to express her creativity, but when she started using acrylic paint she knew it was the ideal medium for her.

“I love the versatility of acrylic paint; you can achieve anything from wispy watercolor washes to thick textured impasto - and everything in between,” Johnson said. “The paint dries quickly and permanently – this allows me to layer and achieve effects not possible with other mediums.”

Johnson is an active artist member of Gallery North. She also participates in the annual Edmonds Art Studio Tour, when she and other Edmonds artists open their art studios to the public.

Her love of color and the feeling she has for her subjects is evident in her paintings. Whether it is viewing heron chicks at the Edmonds waterfront, or observing the raccoon, opossum or crow families growing up in her own yard, Johnson finds joy in the connections she makes in nature. Collectors often remark on her ability to capture the personality and spirit of her subjects.

“I love to observe animals in their natural element,” she said. “This inspires me to try and capture the feeling that I get from these encounters in my paintings.”

After viewing her work, people are often inspired to share stories of their animal encounters. Johnson invites exhibit attendees to share theirs in a guestbook she will have on display during the show.

An artist reception is set for 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 7. Another reception will be held from 5-8 p.m. May 18 during the third Thursday Art Walk Edmonds.
