Emergency Preparedness - are you ready for a disaster?

By Sarah Kneller | Jul 11, 2018

Fairly recently, my family reinvested in new emergency preparedness kits, which got me to thinking, how many people in our community are prepared for a natural or man-made disaster?

No matter where you live, disaster can strike at any time, so it’s important to have a planned response when you’re at work, on vacation or on the road.

What are you waiting for?

Make sure to have a family communication plan in place; all members of the family should review and practice the plan.

Have all family members’ and other important phone numbers written down or memorized. If you’re guilty like my family, all numbers live in your phone and in clouds and when that last precious battery bar drops down, so would all our phone numbers.

Have an emergency kit in your car and two weeks food and water at home. (Moms, for us that means some wine as well. I’m kidding… maybe)

Be sure to store all important documents - birth certificates, insurance policies, etc. - in a fire-proof safe or safety deposit box.

Assign two family members responsible for learning the first aid and CPR (some suggestions are to assign one, but if that person is the one who needs it better safe than sorry, huh?)

Know how to shut off utilities.

So if your family hasn’t revisited their emergency preparedness plans now is a great time to do it.

As it’s said, “Luck favors the prepared.” Emergency preparedness is a team sport, and for every person who prepares we can prevent a few more from panic in a crisis.
