David Bui doesn’t want his little sister’s tragic, untimely death to define her legacy.

That’s why he and the rest of his family are working so hard to raise money for an endowment in her name – The Anna Bui World of Hope Fund – at the University of Washington Bothell, where Anna Bui had been student.

“This is a good way to remember my sister, Anna, rather than always focusing on how she died,” he said. “Years from now, when people have forgotten about this tragedy, they’ll still know who Anna Bui was.”

Weeks before she was fatally shot at a gathering in Mukilteo, Anna took a nearly month-long trip through Europe. She had just finished her first year of college and was planning to study nursing. When she came home, she was happier than ever before.

“She wanted to travel more, and she also wanted to pursue nursing in order to help people,” David said.

Last September, after her passing, the Bui family approached UW-Bothell administrators about creating a scholarship fund to help students study abroad. Now, they’re hoping a fundraiser set for 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at the Rosehill Community Center will cement that fund forever.

“The way the endowment works is it lives in perpetuity,” said Sean Marsh, Director of Advancement and External Relations at UW-Bothell. “Each year, that scholarship will be awarded to one or two students. The more money raised, the more students it can help.”

Marsh said the fund needs an initial $25,000 to become an endowment. That’s where the fundraiser comes in.

Tickets can be purchased for $40 online at http://www.uwb.edu/advancement/annabui. $30 of each ticket goes to the fund. Attendees must be 21 or older.

The event will feature international appetizers and desserts, as well as wine and beer.

There will be an auction with prizes, such as a vacation getaway, hotel packages, jerseys signed by Seahawks players, artwork by local artists and photographers, and products from Anna’s favorite line of cosmetics, Tarte.

Special guest Mark Wright from KING 5 news is set to speak. His son had attended the party at which Anna and others were shot.

Bui said he’s particularly excited for an informal choir performance in his sister’s honor, as well as balloon release toward the end of the event. He said his family appreciates all the help they’ve received in organizing the fundraiser.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have so many people willing to help us,” he said.
