Fun milestones coming up | Editor's Note

By Brandon Gustafson

Well it will be June later this week and with that comes events that always seemed so far away.

As I’ve written before, I have a younger sister, Katie, who is a senior at Kamiak High School. This Friday is her prom, and Friday, June 15 is her graduation.

Wow. I know people may roll their eyes at me saying this, but really, that does make me feel old.

But as I’ve said before, she is one of the most hardworking people I’ve ever met in my life.

She has wanted to own her own bakery since she was just a wee lass and has since worked her butt off to make that dream a reality.

Starting in the fall, she will be attending Johnson and Wales University in Denver to pursue that dream.

I remember her and my dad watching baking shows on the Food Network when she was still in elementary school, and then all of a sudden, she was always in our kitchen.

I’d walk into our kitchen and there’d be flour, sugar, and eggs everywhere. Things would be a mess, but at least I never had to help clean it up.

Time went on and her skills gradually improved. She has a portfolio of various cakes and cupcakes she’s made throughout the years and seeing the progress she’s made since the start of her culinary career is truly fascinating.

She uses fondant to make these absolutely elaborate cakes that look just like ones you would see in fancy cake shops or on TV.

She also spent last school year and a part of this school year learning more about culinary arts by studying at the Sno-Isle Tech Center and after school, her work wasn’t done as she would go straight to work at the Choux Choux Bakery in downtown Everett.

One thing is for sure, the girl can stay busy. And on top of all that, she always had straight As. How is that even possible?

Sometimes I swear that one of us is adopted as she just continually blows me away. I know that she constantly impresses everyone else in our family as well.

With her prom coming up this Friday, I’ll break out my camera, shoot some pictures and hop in on some as well. I’ll also have to do the big brother task of intimidating her date. Someone has to, right?

Anyways, I’m very proud of her and it’s not often I feel old, but I certainly do now with two huge milestones over the next few weeks.
