Gallery North announced the opening of “Before and After the Wine,” a featured exhibit by Lynnea Mattson and Valerie Mayer, two award winning regional watercolor artists.

“Before and After the Wine” shows the artists’ unique watercolor painting styles. While Mattson paints in a more controlled manner including more detail and precision in her works, Mayer paints in a looser, fluid style working more spontaneously with broader brush strokes.

The artists display scenes of animals, nature, flowers, and people enjoying the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Mattson’s painting career started in 1999 with acrylic, then experimenting with oil painting. In 2005 she was introduced to watercolor and has never looked back. Her love for this watercolor inspired her to study under several well-known watercolor artists.

Mattson regularly attends seminars and classes by instructors who challenge her with new ideas and methods.

“Painting releases my joy in the beauty and essence of life that I see in the world,” Mattson said. “I want viewers to feel this essence and live the moment I have created through my paintings.”

Mayer has enjoyed watercolor painting for more than 30 years. Mayer endeavors to share her love of nature - its shorelines and forests, her garden and travels. She carries her camera and sketchbook wherever she travels to capture subjects and places that intrigue her.

“My goal as an artist is to create paintings inspired by places I visit and the life encountered along the way,” Mayer said. “My favorite paintings are those that elicit a smile or prompt a viewer’s fond memory of their experience with the given scene.”

The artists’ reception for “Before and After the Wine” is on Saturday, July 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Gallery North and is in conjunction with the Edmonds Wine Walk.

Meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and see the creations Mattson and Mayer have painted.  The artists also will be present at Gallery North during the Edmonds Art walk on Thursday, July 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. This exhibit will be open to the public through July 31.
