A Honu World of Hula will be launching its programs this September at Gold’s Gym in Mukilteo.

The featured classes are a Hula Babies class for new and expectant moms, Island Jams for Toddlers, and Island Grooves fitness classes for all ages and abilities.

An Open House is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Gold’s Gym, at 12138 Mukilteo Speedway. It is free to attend.

A Hula Babies demonstration will be held from 1:15-1:45 p.m. and an Island Grooves demonstration will be held from 2-2:30 p.m. No registration required. Regular classes begin the week of Sept. 8.

While pregnant with her son, A Honu World of Hula Co-Founder Marcie Mahinakealo Cheung realized there was a lack of activities to do with younger babies.

After discussing the dilemma with Co-Founder and Hula Instructor JoanMarie Ke`alaileiha`aha`a Hughes, they found a Babywearing Hula class in Hawaii led by Kumu Hula Maile Loo.

With the blessing of Loo, Hughes and Cheung, are eager to share this class with young families here.

“I’m excited to bring the Babywearing hula class to the Northwest,” Hughes said. “I believe that the baby bonding benefits, as well as the early exposure to music, rhythms, and movement for my own children greatly influenced and helped develop the love of music and dancing that they enjoy today as young adults.”

Hughes and Cheung are also launching Island Grooves fitness classes, a way to get a workout while introducing authentic island dances and cultural influences of the Pacific Rim at the same time.
